Becoming a UK resident is quite easy,  you might think. You just have to move there.

While in Germany you’re supposed to go to a registration office, non of this exists in the UK.

But for getting a flat as well as for a job you definitively need  a bank account – and for getting a bank account, you need a flat. See where the weak spot is?
Having found a room in a flat share is the first step of success. But the bank really needs a proof that you are actually living there.

That’s why I’m having my third meeting at a Scottish bank on Monday.

At least the accountant assured me: “After all you are an European citizen – that shouldn’t be a problem.”
Hope that the Scottish people are a bit more European than the English are. 😀

Einwohner in Großbritannien werden? Klar, kein Problem – das könnte man zumindest denken. Man muss doch einfach nur hinziehen.
Während man in Deutschland brav zum Einwohnermeldeamt spaziert, kommt man im Vereinigten Königreich schnell ins grübeln – denn da gibt’s sowas erst gar nicht.

Um eine Wohnung oder einen Job zu bekommen, braucht man auf jeden Fall ein britisches Bankkonto. Um ein Konto zu eröffnen, wird allerdings eine britische Adresse verlangt. Mitbekommen, dass da eine Schwachstelle ist?
Die erste Hürde ist schon mal dadurch geschafft, dass ich ein Zimmer in einer WG gefunden habe. Nun verlangt die Bank aber einen echten Nachweis, dass ich auch wirklich dort wohne.

Aus diesem Grund habe ich am Montag bereits meinen dritten Termin in einer schottischen Bankfiliale.

Zumindest hat der Mitarbeiter am Schalter mir bereits bestätigt: “Immerhin sind Sie europäischer Bürger – das sollte also eigentlich kein Problem sein.”
Hoffen wir, dass die Schotten etwas mehr europäisches Blut in den Adern haben als die Engländer. 😀
