The new year’s finally rolling in its everyday routine – about time for our next short trip to explore the country we live in and break out a bit.
Destination: Shetland. That little archipelago far up north where not even many Scots have ever been to. And where the days are still damn short this time of year. But since we also wanted to see incredible night skies and maybe even northern lights this did not pose a threat to us, and we definitely could enjoy the former.

The adventure ended as it began: with the flight in a Saab 340 that holds up to 34 passengers and is equipped with two incredibly loud propellers. But while the inbound flight was rather crowded, the capacity utilisation on the return flight was, well … 11 people aboard (including one crew member and two pilots!).

Based in Lerwick (which houses roughly a third of the whole island population), with a rented car, newly bought hiking boots and loads of cookies we embarked on our journey exploring the mainland of Shetland.

In only four days I think we managed to see and do quite a lot:
We’ve been to almost every corner of the mainland, enjoyed fabulous nature and landscapes, tested ourselves with hiking tours to the unknown. We caught a glimpse of Shetland spring (or was it summer?) and harsh winter storms. We fed Shetland ponies in the wild and then tried to escape them, watched seals sunbathing, and realised that Shetland live seems to end with the vanishing of daylight.

Das neue Jahr ist mittlerweile so richtig in Gang – Zeit für unseren nächsten Kurztrip um dem Alltag etwas zu entfliehen.
Ziel diesmal: Shetland. Die kleine Inselgruppe dort oben wo selbst die meisten Schotten noch nie gewesen sind. Und wo die Tage um diese Jahreszeit noch verdammt kurz sind. Aber da wir auch auf tolle Sterne und vielleicht sogar ein kleines Nordlicht gehofft haben, war das kein Problem für uns. Und zumindest ersteres durften wir definitiv genießen.

Beendet haben wir das Abenteuer, wie wir es begonnen hatten: Mit dem Flug in einer Saab 340, die gerade mal 34 Passagiere fassen kann und über zwei unerhört laute Propeller verfügt. Aber während der Hinflug noch gut ausgebucht war, war die Auslastung auf dem Rückflug eher witzig … nur 8 Passagiere.

Unsere Basis hatten wir in Lerwick. In der Hauptstadt der Shetlands wohnt gut ein Drittel der gesamtem Inselbevölkerung. Mit gemietetem Auto, neuen Wanderschuhen und genügend Keksen haben wir uns daran gemacht, die Hauptinsel zu erkunden.

In nur vier Tagen haben wir dann auch eine Menge gesehen und erlebt:
Wir waren in fast jeder Ecke der Hauptinsel, haben wunderschöne Natur und Landschaften genossen und Wandertouren ins Unbekannte unternommen. Wir durften einen Hauch Shetland-Frühling (oder vielleicht was das auch schon Sommer?) erleben und kräftige Winterstürme überstehen. Wir haben Shetland-Ponies mitten in der Wildnis gefüttert und Robben beim Sonnenbaden beobachtet. Wir haben auch festgestellt, dass das Leben auf Shetland mit den letzten Sonnenstrahlen schlafen zu gehen scheint.
